Food and emotions

Eating is not simply a question of satisfying one’s pangs of hunger, but also of satisfying one’s emotions. We do not feed ourselves only to nourish our bodies, but also to nourish our spirits. Since ancient times, food has been a means of communicating and gathering together in celebration, and also an antidote to loneliness, sadness, boredom and depression.

The problems arise when the eating habits determined by your emotional state put the healthiness of your diet at risk and lead to uncontrolled weight gain.

Many expert dieticians have come to the conclusion that the solution to the majority of problems arising in people who are overweight, does not simply consist in prescribing a diet plan and physical exercise. Rather, the subject’s attitude to losing weight and maintaining the loss must be taken into account, applying new techniques of behavioural modification.

Being able to understand if one is eating to satisfy an emotional need is the first step towards a cure. To maintain one’s psycho-physical wellbeing, feel good about oneself and be really healthy, one must eat a proper, healthy diet and take regular physical exercise. To understand the reasons why one is overeating, one must face up to one’s problems and find practical solutions which will help one to correct bad habits and lose weight.
