This treatment consists of massaging the body using certain essential oils and aromatic plants. These are inhaled by the patient, putting him a state of relaxation and permitting the treatment of various ailments. Smell is the sense most closely connected to our emotions and memory; it is not by chance that smells have such a powerful evocative effect upon us. Some essences have a considerable influence on our emotional and psychological equilibrium, and can relieve anxiety, unhappiness and the damaging effects of stress. When the brain is stimulated by an aroma, the nerve-endings in the nose send a message to the limbic system (the apparatus controlling memory and the emotions), which passes it on to the hypothalamus, the regulator of the hormonal system. |
