Comic Therapy

Print E-mail

Patch Adams, the celebrated American physician who revolutionized the way of understanding patient care, is considered the father of comic therapy

Laughter has a positive effect on the immune system because, as well as reducing anxiety levels, it triggers a series of chemical processes. These processes have been scientifically studied and include an increased production of natural analgesics such as beta-endomorphines and catecholamines, an increase of oxygen in the blood and a reduction of residual air in the lungs.

The figure of the clown-doctor has now made an appearance in paediatric hospitals. He entertains the children with jokes and music, paying particular attention to the wishes they express. These are the simple, but valuable methods of comic-therapy.

Results from the United States have demonstrated the value of clown-therapy. Research carried out at the New York Presbyterian Hospital showed a 50% decrease in the length of hospital stay and a 20% reduction in the use of anaesthetics.
