There are many thermal springs throughout Tuscany and in recent years they have enjoyed a real boom in tourism. This is mainly amongst people in search of psycho-physical well-being at spa hotels and modern spa centres set in extraordinarily beautiful countryside.

At the foot of the mediaeval village of Saturnia (GR), in the province of Grosseto, lies the Terme di Saturnia Spa Resort, a wonderful place surrounded by ancient parkland. The spa treatments on offer here are combined with the latest relaxation and physical regeneration techniques. In 2007 a 9-hole golf course was also opened. The waters of Saturnia have been shown to have notable beneficial effects in anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory treatments for dermatological, odontostomatological and hepatic complaints.

The springs of Chianciano Terme (province of Siena) are famous for their digestive properties and for treatment of ailments relating to the digestive system. In the same province the Terme di Montepulciano, close to the fabulous Val D’Orcia, are famous for their sulfurous and bromidic salt waters.

One should definitely not miss the opportunity to visit the Bagni di San Filippo, situated between the Val D’Orcia and the woods of Mount Amiata.  This is one of the most spectacular spas in Toscana, with its white chalky deposits snaking through the green trees.

Casciano Terme (province of Pisa) is another delightful spot, set amongst the Pisan hills. Matilde di Canossa visited here in 1100. The waters of this spa are efficacious in treating many ailments such as rheumatism, arthrosis, rhinitis, pharyngitis and bronchitis.

Montecatini Terme, in the province of Pistoia, is another spa which is famous all over the world for the digestive and curative properties of its waters. If you suffer from digestive problems, often induced by the stress and frenetic pace of daily life, you can find a remedy here thanks to this healing liquid.

If you descend for 200 metres in the Valdinievole you come to an ancient cave, the Grotta Giusti, one of the most remote sudatory grottoes in Europe. The profuse sweating generated in the hot, wet atmosphere of the grotto facilitates the elimination of impurities, cleansing the body and bringing enormous benefits to the respiratory system. The Centre at Grotto Giusti offers high-tech facilities, together with a 750 m² pool, a spectacular big waterfall and underwater hydro-massage.

At the heart of the Island of Elba, a short distance from the historic town of Portoferraio, you can find the spa of Terme San Giovanni. The curative properties of its mud were only discovered at the end of the 1950’s.
